At first, it looked like Sandy would mean curtains for Halloween, but instead trick or treating has trickled on toward Thanksgiving. It started with our town’s annual parade (the day before the storm hit), continued on to a rescheduled trick or treating in Pittsburgh and then a final hurrah held at the school on Sunday. The candy overfloweth. As in the past, I used up some of the loot by chopping and folding it into dough. While Elio might prefer his Reese’s and Twix au natural, Guy and I will always opt for cookies. Hurricane Candy Cookies!
I was definitely a kid who loved to be in the kitchen, watching my aunts and grandmother and mom cook. I feel lucky to have had this in my life and that I still get to be in the kitchen, cooking and making pictures. These pictures are not my best by any means, but it was quite a moment last Saturday when my great-aunt Aggie (80) and her brother, Uncle Dicky (82), squared off over who could better roll out the pizza dough. (Hint, the wine bottle didn’t do so well!) Funny, loud and, in the end, delicious. Just like it should be in a kitchen. —Guy
